Description

An AC/DC ceiling fan has electronic components in them called capacitors which help your fan work.

Start/Run Capacitor

As the name suggests, this capacitor both helps the fan motor to start but it also determines it's top speed. This capacitor is always installed in the fan and connected to the fans motor. These capacitors are in use all the time the fan is on, and as such can wear out over time from use, but can also fail prematurely due to power surges or spikes during storms, etc.

The symptoms of a failing start/run capacitor is if your fan is running slower on all 3 speeds and is having trouble starting (especially if you try and start from the low setting).

Speed Capacitor

The second capacitor is called a speed capacitor, and again as the name suggest this capacitor actually slows the fan down from high, to medium and low. As such this capacitor is not in use when the fan is on high, so it is unusual for this capacitor to fail.

The speed can either be in the fan (for pull cord fans) or attached to a wall controller.

Combined (Triple) Capacitors

Some fans have these two capacitors combined into one capacitor called a combined or triple capacitor.

So which capacitor do I need for my fan?

Below is a list of what Hunter fans came out with what capacitors, but it is always safest to check what is in the fan before ordering (note capacitors can hold electrical charge and as such should only be handled by a licenced electrician).
